London-based startup Volter has secured €3 million in pre-seed funding to advance its mission of enabling real estate owners to monetise rooftop solar installations. The funding will support platform development, customer acquisition, and expansion into new European markets.
Funding Details
The funding round was led by Transition, with participation from Seedcamp, real estate investor Neptunia, and prominent angel investors, including Johannes Schildt (Kry) and climate tech entrepreneur Eamon Jubbawy.
Volter’s Mission and Technology
Founded in 2024 by Luke Buhl-Nielsen and Alex Joss, Volter offers an end-to-end software solution tailored to commercial and industrial (C&I) property owners. The platform streamlines the deployment and management of solar installations, offering features such as:
- Automated billing
- Real-time performance monitoring
- Simplified installation proposals
- ESG reporting tools
By integrating renewable energy solutions into real estate, Volter transforms buildings into revenue-generating assets. The company also plans to broaden its services to include battery storage and virtual power plants.
A New Asset Class in Real Estate
Co-founder Luke Buhl-Nielsen commented:
“C&I properties are merging with energy to become revenue-generating power plants – this is the creation of an entirely new asset class. Forward-thinking real estate owners are rapidly recognising the immense potential of integrating renewable energy sources – such as solar – into their buildings.”
Volter addresses a critical market gap by providing robust software to help real estate owners manage and monetise renewable energy output, empowering them to scale solar portfolios across diverse sites.
Market Trends and Impact
The European solar market is experiencing rapid growth, with rooftop installations potentially meeting up to 25% of electricity demand. Volter’s platform helps stakeholders navigate the complexities of scaling solar investments, aligning with trends in renewable energy adoption.
Investor Perspectives
Ari Helgason, Partner at Transition, highlighted the company’s impact on sustainability:
“By allowing C&I real estate owners to offer clean energy options to their tenants, Volter’s operating system accelerates the adoption of renewables and supports a more sustainable grid. With nearly 40% of global CO₂ emissions stemming from real estate, Volter’s solutions play a crucial role in decarbonising the sector.”
Seedcamp’s Tom Wilson added:
“Rising electricity prices and declining solar hardware costs make rooftop solar an attractive investment. Volter’s platform enables C&I property owners to scale solar efficiently and optimise returns. We’re thrilled to support their mission to drive sustainable energy infrastructure.”
With its innovative platform and strong backing, Volter is poised to reshape the role of renewable energy in the commercial real estate sector, driving both economic and environmental gains.
