IonKraft Secures €3.5 Million to Revolutionize Sustainable Packaging

Aachen-based IonKraft secures €3.5 million to drive circular economy in packaging

IonKraft GmbH, an innovative startup from RWTH Aachen University, has raised €3.5 million in its first equity funding round to accelerate the circular economy in the packaging industry.

The funding was co-led by M Ventures, the strategic investment arm of Merck, and TechVision Fund (TVF), with participation from High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF). This investment will enable IonKraft to scale the production and sales of its plasma-based coating machines, designed to make packaging fully recyclable and sustainable.

“This financing round is a decisive step to support the market launch of our technology and prepare for future scaling. We are thrilled to have a diverse group of investors who share our vision,” said Benedikt Heuer, Co-Founder of IonKraft.

Innovative Technology for Circular Packaging

Founded in 2021 by Dr. Montgomery Jaritz and Benedikt Heuer, IonKraft specializes in plasma-based barrier coatings that replace non-recyclable solutions in packaging. The startup’s coatings are chemically resistant, fully recyclable, and match the barrier properties of glass—making them ideal for food and cosmetic containers.

The company’s cutting-edge technology also integrates seamlessly with existing production lines, offering a sustainable alternative to multilayer and fluorinated (PFAS) packaging, which are currently non-recyclable.

“IonKraft delivers a market-ready coating technology that can easily be integrated into existing production lines. The company holds a huge lever to enable circularity, starting in a sector outside the mainstream focus,” said Björn Lang, Partner at TVF Management.

Plans for Growth and Market Launch

IonKraft plans to deploy its first industrial coating system by the end of 2024, with a full market launch of its products expected in 2025. The company has already benefited from support by the European EIC Accelerator and the German government’s BMWK EXIST research program.

“With an excellent team and an outstanding track record, IonKraft is well-prepared for any challenges that may lie ahead,” said Nils Lang, Investment Manager at HTGF. “Their solution addresses strong market demand and aligns with the current momentum for sustainable innovation.”

This funding marks a significant milestone for IonKraft as it positions itself at the forefront of sustainable packaging technology, transforming the industry towards a circular economy.
