Petto Design: A California Startup Is Turning Pet Furniture Into Modern Interior Design

The pet industry is enormous, yet one category has long involved an obvious compromise: products designed for a pet’s comfort are not always things people want to see in the middle of a beautifully designed home.

Traditional crates, plastic carriers, and standard pet houses may serve their purpose, but they rarely become part of the interior itself.

A new California startup, Petto Design, is taking a different approach. The company creates furniture for dogs and cats that looks less like something from a pet store and more like a thoughtfully designed piece of modern furniture.

The brand’s first product, the Petto Design Cabin, combines a comfortable private space for a pet with the aesthetics of contemporary furniture. Natural wood, clean geometry, slatted details, warm interior lighting, and a minimalist design allow the Cabin to sit naturally in a living room, bedroom, or home office rather than being hidden away.

That idea became the foundation of the brand’s philosophy:

“Furniture, not a kennel.”

More Than a Decade of Woodworking Experience Behind a New Startup

Petto Design may be a new project, but its founder is far from new to furniture production.

Founder Arthur has been professionally working with wood and furniture manufacturing for more than a decade. He is the owner of Arthouse Manufactory, a company specializing in custom woodwork and complex, individually produced projects.

Together with a business partner, Arthur is also involved in a company specializing in premium wooden furniture rentals for events, including projects for major corporate clients.

As a result, Petto Design did not begin as an experimental pet startup trying to figure out manufacturing from scratch. Behind the brand were already years of hands-on experience with wood, furniture construction, finishing techniques, production processes, and the details that distinguish a genuinely high-quality product.

Eventually, Arthur decided to apply that experience to an entirely different audience: pets and the people who share their homes with them.

The First Market Test — Without an Advertising Campaign

The story of Petto Design began in a way that is somewhat unusual for a modern startup.

Instead of launching with a large advertising campaign or investing heavily in promotion, the team decided to test the idea first.

One of the first versions of the product was simply posted on Facebook Marketplace.

The response was unexpected.

Within the first week, the listing generated tens of thousands of views and saves. People began asking about pricing, availability, sizes, and how they could order one.

But perhaps the most interesting reaction was something the team had not anticipated at all: some users thought the product images were AI-generated.

For a dog crate, the product simply looked too much like designer furniture.

But the products in the photographs were real, physically manufactured pieces made in California. What some people initially perceived as a beautiful digital concept was already an actual product.

That early organic response became one of the signals that there was room in the market for something different.

Instead of Hiding the Crate, Put It in the Living Room

Petto Design operates at the intersection of two industries: pet products and interior furniture.

And that changes the way the product is designed.

For the pet, the piece needs to provide a comfortable and functional personal space. For the owner, particularly someone who has invested significant thought and resources into the design of their home, the appearance of that object matters as well.

The Petto Design Cabin was therefore developed from both perspectives: as a private space for an animal and as a piece of furniture for the home.

Instead of exposed metal bars, there is natural wood and architectural detailing. Instead of a utilitarian object that owners may want to hide, there is a piece designed to sit naturally beside a sofa, armchair, console, or other carefully selected furniture.

The brand is not trying to compete by producing the cheapest possible mass-market pet products. Its focus is on customers who value materials, craftsmanship, durability, and design.

Made in California

Another important part of the Petto Design concept is its production.

The brand’s products are made in California rather than sourced as finished mass-produced items from an overseas manufacturer. This allows the team to maintain control over construction, materials, finishing, and the quality of the final product while continuing to refine the design based on early customer feedback.

The Petto Design Cabin is now in production, and the company has opened early-access pre-orders for its first production batch.

Customers who pre-order can reserve a Cabin from the initial batch at a special early-access rate, with a complimentary matching cushion included with every pre-order.

The first deliveries are expected to begin soon.

But the Cabin is intended to be only the beginning.

Petto Design plans to continue developing contemporary furniture for dogs and cats of different sizes, creating products that respond to the needs of animals without asking their owners to compromise the aesthetics of their homes.

As the role of pets in people’s lives has changed, the idea behind the company feels increasingly relevant. If pets are treated as members of the family, why should their furniture still look like something that needs to be hidden?

Petto Design offers a different answer: it shouldn’t.
