Tallinn-based mobility giant Bolt has made a landmark move by acquiring Danish ride-hailing company Viggo, marking the first acquisition in its 12-year history. The deal, for an undisclosed sum, allows Bolt to enter Denmark’s ride-hailing market, expanding its presence beyond its existing e-bike rental service in the country.
A Strategic Leap into Denmark’s Ride-Hailing Market
Bolt’s acquisition of Viggo positions it as the largest ride-hailing operator in Denmark, a milestone that CEO and founder Markus Villig describes as a natural step for the company.
“We have always had a high bar for M&A, but we share Viggo’s mission to improve cities and were impressed by their fully electric operations,” said Villig. “We look forward to building on Viggo’s success and bringing more innovation to the local ride-hailing market to better serve customers in Denmark.”
Founded in 2019, Viggo has built a reputation for sustainable mobility with a 100% electric vehicle fleet. The company operates over 300 electric cars, serving 450,000 users across Copenhagen and Aarhus. With more than 500 professional drivers, Viggo has been recognized as Denmark’s best-performing taxi service.
Viggo CEO Kenneth Herschel sees the acquisition as a catalyst for growth. “Viggo was founded to provide a high-quality, sustainable taxi experience, and we are proud of what we have achieved. Joining Bolt allows us to scale our impact, benefiting both drivers and passengers with new technology, increased demand, and continued commitment to quality,” he said.
Bolt’s Expansion Strategy and Vision
Since its launch in 2013 as a ride-hailing company, Bolt has diversified its services, now offering scooters, e-bikes, food and grocery delivery, and car-sharing across more than 600 cities in 50 countries. With over 200 million customers and 4.5 million drivers worldwide, Bolt is on a mission to accelerate the shift from private car ownership to shared mobility solutions.
Denmark represents a key market for Bolt, where it has already gained traction through its e-bike rental service. The addition of ride-hailing creates a multi-modal transport ecosystem, giving customers the flexibility to choose between electric bikes or vehicles for their trips.
Further strengthening its position, Bolt has also announced a new partnership with Danish taxi company Taxi 4×27. This collaboration will add over 600 vehicles to the Bolt platform, bolstering its ride-hailing fleet in the country.
With sustainability and innovation at its core, Bolt’s expansion into Denmark signals its commitment to reshaping urban mobility and providing eco-friendly, high-quality transport solutions on a global scale.
