Digital divide in Germany – why you should act as an entrepreneur*.
A recent study by Diamonds Factory found that the digital divide continues to grow rapidly. For this reason, companies are now being advised to take an interest in the issue of the digital divide and take active action in their companies. The study points out that in Germany (2019), about 15 percent said their last online purchase was more than 12 months ago, or they had never shopped online. In contrast to Austria, however, this figure is still low. This is because in the neighboring country, the proportion of this answer was 26 percent, while in Switzerland, 17 percent of respondents gave this answer. If you convert these percentages into figures, you get the following result:
- 12.4 million people in Germany
- 2.3 million people in Austria
- 1.4 million people in Switzerland
Furthermore, around 22 percent in Germany stated that they had generally low digital skills. It is therefore clear that the digital divide and bridging this gap is a topic that should be relevant for founders and companies.
