Sony and LEGO invest TWO MILLION DOLLARS in Epic Games – makers of Fortnite

Sony and LEGO invest in Epic Games

Sony Group Corporation and the KIRKBI holding company have invested a combined $2 billion in Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite and the gaming platform Epic Games Store. The money allocated is meant to help Epic build the metaverse – as the company is pushing for a digital world alongside Microsoft, Nvidia and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta.

The metaverse from Epic Games is to be called the “Megaverse” and focus strictly on the gaming world. The investment from the holding company holding the LEGO group is also no surprise. After all, LEGO and Epic Games recently announced that they would be working together to create a metaverse and competitor to Minecraft and Roblox.

The Megaverse and Epic Games’ concept was mentioned by NewMarketing in its Trendbook on trends in the marketing and technology world.

– As a creative entertainment company, we are excited to invest in Epic Games to deepen our relationship in the metaverse – the space where creators and users share their time. We also believe that Epic’s expertise and powerful game engine combined with Sony’s technologies will accelerate our various ventures, such as the development of new digital fan experiences in sports and virtual production initiatives,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, president of Sony Group Corporation.

Epic Games valued at $31.5 billion

Tim Sweeney’s company is currently valued at over $30 billion, which is half the value of a giant such as Activision Blizzard (recently purchased by Microsoft, by the way). Epic Games continues to develop its main project, Fortnite, which is now one of the most popular MMOs in the world, as well as the Epic Games Store.

Epic Games has also recently released its new Unreal Engine 5, which will be used to create, among other things, the new Witcher. Epic Games has also been heavily involved in helping Ukraine. The company donated all Fortnite revenue from March 20, 2022 to April 3, 2022. It managed to raise as much as $70 million in total.

Epic Games has become a real giant in a few years. Over the period of its existence, however, it has made numerous enemies. Including, among others, Apple. The conflict between these two American giants has lasted for two years. It all began with the introduction of an internal currency to Fortnite, which allowed to bypass the payment agent – Apple, which led to the removal of the game from the App Store. Eventually Apple lost the battle in court, but this is not the end of the war between the giants.
