Strasbourg’s Aerleum Secures €5.5 Million to Revolutionize CO₂ Capture and Conversion Technology

Strasbourg, France – Climate tech startup Aerleum has raised €5.5 million in a seed round to accelerate the development of its cutting-edge CO₂ capture and conversion technology. Led by 360 Capital and HTGF, with contributions from Norrsken, Bpifrance, and Marble, the funding aims to industrialize Aerleum’s breakthrough system that converts atmospheric CO₂ and low-carbon hydrogen into synthetic fuels (e-fuels) and chemicals. This innovation is poised to drive carbon-neutral solutions for hard-to-abate sectors like maritime, aviation, and chemicals.

Aerleum’s technology stands out by capturing and converting CO₂ in a single reactor using proprietary bifunctional materials and precision heating. By removing some of the most energy-intensive steps in the production process, the company enables large-scale, cost-effective e-fuel production while drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Aerleum is on track to achieve price parity with fossil fuels, offering industries a sustainable decarbonization path without compromising on cost or scalability.

Mission to Make E-Fuels Accessible

“Our mission has always been to make e-fuels as affordable and accessible as fossil fuels,” said Sébastien Fiedorow, co-founder and CEO of Aerleum. “With this seed funding, we’re one step closer to scaling our technology to meet the urgent global demand for decarbonization.”

Aerleum’s technology not only addresses the climate crisis but also solves economic challenges often associated with clean energy solutions. Unlike conventional methods that are limited by high costs and geographical constraints, Aerleum’s innovation is scalable worldwide, optimizing hydrogen sourcing and offering a competitive alternative to fossil fuels.

Focus on E-Methanol for Maritime and Aviation Sectors

Aerleum’s initial focus is on producing e-methanol, a clean, energy-dense fuel gaining traction as a key alternative for maritime shipping and aviation. E-methanol reduces greenhouse gas emissions, cuts air pollutants, and is easy to transport and store. With growing global pressure on these sectors to decarbonize, Aerleum is well-positioned to lead the transformation.

The company plans to launch its first full-scale pilot unit with the new funding, partnering with key industry players to deploy its technology in critical emission-reduction areas. “Our vision is to create a circular carbon economy, where atmospheric CO₂ becomes a valuable resource,” added Steven Bardey, co-founder and CTO of Aerleum.

Growing Recognition and Support

Aerleum has garnered significant recognition in the clean tech space, winning several prestigious awards, including the CMA CGM “Maritime Decarbonization” Award and the 2024 i-lab state innovation challenge. The startup is supported by Bpifrance, the Région Grand Est, and various accelerator programs, including Accelair by Air Liquide and ZEBOX by CMA CGM.

Investors from 360 Capital and HTGF expressed strong confidence in Aerleum’s vision, citing the company’s rapid progress and potential to scale quickly. “Aerleum’s combination of breakthrough technology and a bold vision to replace harmful chemicals with sustainable alternatives aligns perfectly with our commitment to fostering impactful innovation,” said Timo Bertsch from HTGF.

With the fresh funding, Aerleum is set to take the next major step in reshaping industries and accelerating the transition to a carbon-neutral future.
