Brussels Startup Model Health Raises €800K to Bring Lab-Grade Movement Analysis to Sports Clinics

Belgian-American startup Model Health raises $1M to turn any smartphone into a sports lab

Brussels, Belgium – Model Health, a transatlantic healthtech startup with roots in Belgium and the US, has secured more than €800,000 in pre-seed funding to make advanced movement analysis accessible through nothing more than a smartphone.

The funding round was led by APEX Capital, with additional backing from Syndicate One, LeanSquare, and imec.istart. Angel investors include leading sports physical therapists Lieven Maesschalck, David Bombeke, and Leen Van Damme, tech founders Jeroen De Wit, Kristof de Smet, Marius Declerck, and an undisclosed European football star.

Model Health was founded in 2024 by former Stanford researchers Antoine Falisse and Scott Uhlrich, together with ex-McKinsey director Nicolas Bellemans. The company’s mission: to democratize lab-grade motion capture for physical therapists, athletic trainers, and sports organizations.

“Every athlete and patient deserves world-class movement analysis,” said Falisse, now CEO. “With only a smartphone, we can unlock insights that once required €100,000-plus equipment, making high-performance tools truly scalable.”

The startup’s technology builds on research conducted at Stanford, where it has already attracted more than 10,000 academic users worldwide. By using standard smartphone cameras, Model Health allows practitioners to capture and interpret movement data that traditionally required specialized labs.

That accessibility could prove transformative in tackling musculoskeletal disorders—one of the world’s most prevalent health issues—and in boosting athletic performance. Early adopters are already reporting impact. “It provides clear, actionable insights into movement patterns, helping me make more informed decisions for my patients’ treatment plans,” said Dr. Wilfredo Agredo, a medical doctor using the system in his clinic.

The fresh capital will fuel product development, commercial rollout, and the expansion of the founding team, with three key hires planned. Investors see the potential for widespread adoption. “Traditionally, athletes need to move from the field to a lab for detailed analysis. Model Health reverses this,” said Koen Bosma, Partner at APEX Capital. “They make the lab go to the athletes. Their technology could become the global standard for measuring and improving movement.”

With its latest funding, Model Health is positioning itself at the intersection of sports, health, and technology—making elite-level movement intelligence available to clinics and organizations everywhere.
