Factorial Acquires Berlin AI Startup Empion to Expand Talent Assessment in Europe

Spanish HR software company Factorial has acquired Empion, a Berlin-based AI-powered talent assessment company founded by Dr. Annika von Mutius, strengthening its position in Germany and adding AI-powered candidate and employee assessments to its platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Deal

The acquisition is part of Factorial’s continued expansion in Germany, which the company describes as its most important European market for workforce technology. The deal gives Factorial access to Empion’s assessment technology and customer base, while expanding its HR software offering beyond core workforce management.

For Factorial, the acquisition reflects a broader effort to build more HR capabilities directly into its platform rather than relying on third-party integrations. Candidate and employee assessments will become part of the company’s own product, connecting recruitment with later stages such as performance management and employee engagement.

Existing Empion customers are expected to continue using the company’s products and receiving support under their current contracts, with Empion’s technology and team set to be integrated into Factorial’s platform over time.

The Technology

Founded in 2021, Empion uses AI to assess candidates based on factors such as cultural fit, skills, and motivations, moving beyond keyword-based CV screening. Factorial plans to add psychometric, cognitive, employee-driven, and skills assessments to the platform, building out Empion’s existing culture-fit-focused approach into a broader assessment suite.

Empion has worked with German companies ranging from small and medium-sized businesses to large enterprises, with customers including Deutsche Telekom, Procter & Gamble, Siemens Mobility, Raiffeisenbanken, and HUK-COBURG.

The Team

The acquisition also brings additional AI expertise into Factorial. Von Mutius, who holds a PhD in mathematics and previously worked on AI robotics systems in San Francisco, will join Factorial’s leadership team in Germany. She is also a board member of the KI-Bundesverband, a major German AI industry association.

What’s Next

The deal highlights the growing role of AI in European HR technology, with Factorial using the acquisition to deepen its presence in Germany while bringing Empion’s assessment technology to customers across Europe.
