Stockholm-based HealthTech startup Eyedentity has closed SEK15 million (€1.4M, $1.6M) in first funding from Norrsken Launcher, KI Innovation, and angel investors, to scale its AI-powered eye diagnostics platform.
The Round
The round was backed by Norrsken Launcher, Karolinska Institutet Innovation, and a group of angel investors.
Anna Fredrixon, Partner at Norrsken Launcher, explained why the fund got behind the company: “Eyedentity moves ML beyond hype to real medical impact. Where most medical AI adds to an already overburdened system, Eyedentity eases the load on specialists by cutting false referrals.”
The Problem Eyedentity Is Solving
An ageing, growing population, a diabetes epidemic, and a wide unmet screening gap are converging into a wave of eye disease that the healthcare system was never built to handle.
Among the deadliest is uveal melanoma (UM), an eye cancer that’s hard to detect and usually found by accident, and too late. Half of all patients eventually die from it, and life expectancy hasn’t improved in decades.
Eyedentity is the only commercial AI tool that helps opticians screen for UM during a standard eye check-up. The system plugs into existing optician infrastructure and flags critical cases within seconds, cutting false referrals to specialists by 90%. That translates into three concrete gains: earlier detection that saves lives, fewer false referrals that free up scarce specialist capacity for the patients who actually need it, and more objective scoring that makes care more equitable.
The Team
Eyedentity combines rare clinical and technical expertise. It was founded by Gustav Stålhammar, an ocular oncologist at St. Erik Eye Hospital and professor at Karolinska Institutet; Mats Holmström, CEO and ML engineer, formerly of RaySearch; and Per Ininbergs, COO.
What’s Next
Eyedentity’s ambition extends well beyond uveal melanoma: the company is building an AI diagnostics platform for opticians, eye clinics, and hospitals worldwide, covering a broad range of eye disease. It’s already in the field, running a live pilot with Synologen, a network of independent Swedish opticians.
