Lund, Sweden — Swedish biotech startup Emulsi Biotech has secured SEK 7 million (€640,000 / $740,000) in a pre-seed funding round led by BSV Ventures, with participation from Almi Invest and two angel investors. The funding will accelerate development of the company’s proprietary oral drug delivery platform for biological medicines.
The newly raised capital will primarily finance in vivo validation studies, a key milestone in demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of Emulsi Biotech’s lipid-based drug delivery technology before advancing toward clinical development.
Founded as a spin-off from Lund University in late 2023, Emulsi Biotech is addressing one of the pharmaceutical industry’s most persistent challenges: enabling biological drugs to be administered orally rather than by injection.
Most biologic therapies—including many peptides, proteins, and antibodies—must currently be injected because they degrade in the gastrointestinal tract and are poorly absorbed. Emulsi Biotech has developed proprietary self-assembling lipid mixtures designed to protect these drugs and improve their absorption, potentially making oral administration a practical alternative.
“Emulsi Biotech is tackling one of pharma’s most persistent challenges—effective oral drug delivery—with its developed technology, and at BSV Ventures we’re proud to support the team as they scale this science to market,” said BSV Ventures.
CEO and co-founder Eimantas Gladkauskas described the investment as a significant milestone for the company.
“Securing our first venture capital round is a massive achievement, but it also comes with a great responsibility. We are incredibly excited to bring Emulsi Biotech one step closer to the market, and this pre-seed round is a monumental first step towards achieving that vision.”
The company has also received strong backing from SmiLe Venture Hub, one of Sweden’s leading life science incubators.
Thomas Areschoug, Business Development Coach at SmiLe Venture Hub, highlighted both the scientific and commercial potential of the startup.
“Emulsi’s technology has the potential to solve one of the pharmaceutical industry’s biggest challenges. The benefits could be significant for both patients, who may gain easier access to treatments, and drug developers, who could achieve the same therapeutic effect with lower doses.”
Headquartered in Lund, Emulsi Biotech was founded by Eimantas Gladkauskas, Cecilia Tullberg, and Professor Patrick Adlercreutz. The company leverages Lund’s internationally recognized biotechnology ecosystem to develop patient-friendly lipid formulations capable of improving the oral delivery of complex biological drugs.
With fresh funding secured, Emulsi Biotech plans to expand its research capabilities and laboratory operations as it prepares for the next stage of development, bringing oral biologic therapies closer to reality.
