Milan-based enterprise execution platform Contents has picked up Balio, a Barcelona startup focused on corporate financial wellbeing, in a deal whose financial terms haven’t been disclosed.
The acquisition is the sixth completed under Contents’ ongoing buy-and-build strategy, a playbook the company has been running across Europe for several years now: acquire enterprise software businesses with established customer bases, then run them through its own AI infrastructure to help them scale faster than they could alone.
Why Balio
Balio brings Contents two things at once — a foothold in the Spanish market and a new product category. The startup’s platform helps employers give staff tools to manage their personal finances more effectively, a niche generally referred to as corporate financial wellbeing. That’s new territory for Contents’ portfolio, which up to now has been built around enterprise execution software.
The deal follows Contents’ 2024 acquisition of Lowpost and the opening of a Madrid office, both signs the company has been building toward a bigger Iberian presence for some time.
The Strategy Behind the Deal
Contents’ approach isn’t simply about adding logos to a portfolio. The company folds each acquired business into a shared platform, pairing the target’s existing customer relationships, specialised teams and regional know-how with Contents’ AI capabilities and broader commercial infrastructure. The idea, per the company, is to become a single go-to technology and services partner for large corporate clients operating across several European markets at once — rather than stitching together a loose collection of independently run companies.
Massimiliano Squillace, Founder and CEO of Contents, framed the Balio deal as another step in that long-running plan rather than a one-off. He described Balio as having a strong team, solid customers and a product with significant room to grow, adding that Contents’ job now is to help it scale beyond what it could achieve independently.
What’s Next
Balio’s team will move over as part of the transaction, and Contents says it intends to build on the platform Balio has already established rather than replace it outright.
Contents also signalled that this won’t be the last deal on its list — the company said further acquisitions are already under consideration as it looks to keep expanding its geography, product lineup and enterprise customer base across Europe.
