Swedish climate tech company Arbon Earth has become the first company to receive official regulatory approval in Indonesia to conduct deep-sea marine carbon capture (mCDR).
How It Works
Arbon Earth cultivates seaweed that naturally absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, then lowers it to the deep ocean floor, leveraging the ocean’s vast capacity to remove CO₂. While seaweed naturally sinks and stores carbon on the seafloor without human intervention, Arbon Earth scales this process up on nature’s own terms to enable large-scale carbon removal.
A Major Turning Point
The expansion into Indonesian waters marks a major turning point for the company. Arbon Earth already operates an active production site in Kenya, but the new permit multiplies its production capacity, unlocking the ability to remove carbon dioxide at a truly global scale. Testing will begin shortly off the coast of Lombok island, with discussions already underway with relevant authorities to expand to additional regions.
Working hand-in-hand with Indonesian authority KKP (the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries), Arbon Earth will gradually scale up its operations to ensure both environmental integrity and maximum climate impact.
Nanna Stranne, CEO of Arbon Earth, said: “We are thrilled about our collaboration with KKP. This permit enables a significantly higher production rate for us, allowing us to meet larger CO2 removal purchases from our customers. At Arbon Earth, we are convinced that the ocean will be a crucial part of the solution to the climate crisis.”
Muhammad Husnul Aini, PIC KKPRL at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, added: “We welcome Arbon Earth’s innovative approach to ocean-based carbon removal. This collaboration aligns with our national commitment to climate action, sustainable marine management, and pioneering new blue economy initiatives in Indonesia.”
