A startupmafia deep dive into Sweden’s deep-tech and defence-tech corridor
If you asked most people outside Sweden to name Swedish tech cities, Linköping wouldn’t come up. That’s a mistake for anyone tracking deep tech, avionics, or — increasingly — defencetech, because Linköping and its neighbour Norrköping, together forming the Östergötland region, have quietly built one of the country’s most technically serious startup ecosystems, anchored by Linköping University, Saab’s major regional presence, and — as of 2026 — a genuinely significant NATO connection.
A 400% tech-jobs boom, hiding in plain sight
Linköping isn’t a household name in the way Stockholm or even Gothenburg are, but the underlying numbers are striking: the region has seen a 400% increase in tech jobs over the past 20 years, according to Linköping Science Park’s own reporting, a growth curve that reflects deliberate, decades-long investment rather than a recent hype cycle. Founded in 1984 as Mjärdevi Science Park (rebranded Linköping Science Park), the park now hosts more than 400–600 companies employing 7,000–14,000 people, depending on which recent count you use — either way, a genuinely large concentration of technical employment for a city of Linköping’s size.
The area’s economic anchor is Linköping University, one of Sweden’s newer major universities (founded 1975) but also its first to offer degree programmes in Engineering Physics and Computer Science — a founding specialism that still shapes the region’s startup character today: hardware, systems engineering, and deep tech over consumer software.
What the region is actually good at
Avionics, defence, and dual-use technology is Linköping’s clearest specialism, and it isn’t a recent pivot — it’s inherited directly from Saab, whose major Linköping operations (aircraft design and systems engineering) have anchored the regional economy for decades and created a deep local talent pool in aerospace, systems, and defence engineering. That legacy has become sharply relevant again given Europe’s 2025–2026 defencetech investment boom (see our earlier piece on the European VCs backing this sector): Östergötland now markets itself explicitly as a region combining large, established defence primes with agile, defence-adjacent startups — a combination regional leaders describe as a genuine structural advantage, since established primes create both talent supply and, increasingly, direct customer and partnership pathways for smaller companies.
Vehicle safety, imaging, and enterprise systems round out the traditional base. Linköping Science Park is home to established tech names like Sectra (medical imaging and secure communications), IFS (enterprise resource planning software), and Autoliv/vehicle-safety-adjacent engineering — alongside newer, pioneering startups like Amra (body-composition medical imaging), XM Reality (remote AR-assisted technical support), and Senion (indoor positioning technology).
Media and visualisation is a genuine, if less prominent, secondary strength: Visual Sweden, an innovation hub focused specifically on visualisation and imaging technology, operates out of the region and reflects Linköping University’s historical strength in computer science and graphics research.
Linköping’s NATO moment: LEAD becomes Sweden’s DIANA accelerator
The single most important recent development for this region’s profile is institutional, not commercial: LEAD, the innovation incubator based in Östergötland and owned by Linköping University’s holding company (LiU Holding AB), has been appointed Sweden’s national accelerator for NATO DIANA — NATO’s own innovation programme for developing new technologies with both civilian and military applications. That’s a significant validation for a regional ecosystem that, until recently, was known primarily within Sweden rather than internationally.
LEAD works closely with Linköping University, Mjärdevi (Linköping Science Park), and Norrköping Science Park, and runs, among other things, an Entrepreneur-in-Residence programme designed to help validate technical ideas and establish new companies from scratch. At a recent regional Science Park update, LEAD’s CEO Catharina Sandberg noted that Östergötland’s advantage lies precisely in its concentration of both large, established defence firms and agile startups side by side — arguing that the region’s real bottleneck isn’t ambition but the speed at which smaller companies can move through the systems built around larger, slower institutional customers.
Reinforcing that defencetech push directly, the region runs a dedicated Defense Hub initiative — a formal collaboration between Linköping Science Park, LEAD, Norrköping Science Park, and Linköping University, funded through Region Östergötland and the Linköping and Norrköping municipalities, explicitly focused on strengthening civil-military innovation collaboration and broadening the regional defence supplier base at a moment of rapid technological change and shifting European security conditions.

Linköping Science Park (the rebranded Mjärdevi Science Park) is the region’s central innovation infrastructure — a municipally owned company supporting companies from brand-new ideas through to large international operations, running development programmes and networking initiatives with a notable emphasis on sustainability and social development alongside its traditional engineering focus. It includes Creactive, a city-funded collaboration space connecting innovators, companies, students, and other regional actors, and even runs outreach programming like a Code Summer Camp aimed at children interested in programming — a longer-term talent-pipeline play. The park’s current strategic plans, publicly unveiled by property owners Corem and Castellum, involve significant physical redevelopment aimed at creating more vibrant, community-oriented innovation spaces to keep pace with the region’s continued tech-sector growth.
LEAD, as described above, is the region’s flagship business incubator and now its NATO DIANA accelerator — a dual identity that makes it one of the more strategically interesting incubators in Sweden heading into the late 2020s.
Norrköping Science Park is Linköping’s smaller neighbouring science park, working in close coordination with both LEAD and Linköping Science Park on shared regional initiatives, including the Defense Hub collaboration.
Why founders choose Linköping-Norrköping
This is a strong regional bet for a specific kind of founder:
- Hardware, systems, and deep-tech founders who benefit from proximity to Saab’s aerospace and systems-engineering talent pool, and from a university with a founding specialism in Engineering Physics and Computer Science rather than a generalist STEM base.
- Defencetech and dual-use founders, especially post-2026: LEAD’s NATO DIANA accelerator status and the dedicated regional Defense Hub initiative give this region a genuinely differentiated pitch versus Stockholm or Gothenburg for anyone building dual-use or defence-adjacent technology.
- Founders who want proximity to large industrial customers rather than a dense VC scene — Östergötland’s advantage is structural (large primes plus agile startups in close physical proximity), not capital-market depth.

The honest trade-off: Linköping-Norrköping doesn’t have anything close to Stockholm’s venture capital density, and founders here should expect to lean more heavily on LEAD’s incubation support, regional grants, and direct partnerships with large local employers than on a deep bench of angel investors or growth-stage VC funds.
The bottom line for founders
Linköping-Norrköping is Sweden’s clearest example of a defence-and-deep-tech-specialised regional ecosystem — one that has spent 40 years quietly building hardware and systems-engineering depth around Linköping University and Saab, and that has just picked up real international validation through LEAD’s NATO DIANA status. If you’re building dual-use technology, avionics-adjacent systems, or hardware-heavy deep tech and want proximity to both a serious research university and an established defence prime, this is a genuinely underrated European base — arguably more relevant to that specific founder profile in 2026 than either Stockholm or Gothenburg.
