Rebaba Brings Second-Life EV Batteries into Homes with New 40 kWh System

Stockholm-based circular energy storage company Rebaba is formally launching its residential battery offering: the Rebaba Home Battery, a 40 kWh system built in Sweden from upcycled EV batteries. The launch follows several pilot installations, including a recent system in Denmark, and offers households a circular alternative to newly imported Chinese battery cells.

The Launch

Rebaba has spent the past years developing and delivering battery energy storage systems from EV batteries for businesses, properties, and charging infrastructure. Without actively marketing to homeowners, the company also received growing residential demand and quietly started a pilot programme with homeowners to test and develop the best offering for the residential market. Now, the Home Battery is being made publicly available.

The system is designed for homes to store more of their solar energy, reduce household energy costs, participate in grid balancing services, and provide extra backup power. It’s aimed at households with solar panels and larger electricity needs, including those with EV charging, heat pumps, or high annual consumption.

Pontus Lund, CCO of Rebaba, explained the appeal: “Homeowners call us looking for a smarter solution to optimize their energy usage and to help store more of their solar. At 40 kWh, the Home Battery is one of the biggest available on the home market, and coupled with our Intelligent Energy Control, it becomes a smart asset for every homeowner to take control of their self-produced solar energy and to cut their energy costs, especially with rising energy prices. Plus, it can act as backup for those who need it, powering the houses throughout long power outages.”

Giving EV Batteries Another Life

When EV batteries eventually leave a vehicle, they generally retain the vast majority of their capacity — the battery itself hasn’t yet reached the end of its useful life. Rebaba runs intelligent diagnostics on retired EV batteries to determine which can continue into stationary energy storage. Suitable batteries are repurposed into new systems, extending the use of materials and battery capacity that have already been produced, before they eventually move on to recycling.

The Home Battery is developed and built in Sweden using the same core battery and control technology as Rebaba’s commercial and industrial systems, adapted for residential sites.

Battery Storage at Every Level

Battery storage is often discussed in the context of large grid-scale projects, but flexibility can also be distributed across thousands of smaller systems. A battery in a home can store electricity when supply is abundant and make it available later, reduce demand during periods when the grid is under greater pressure, and participate in grid balancing services that help keep supply and demand in balance. The same principle already applies to batteries installed at businesses, properties, and charging sites — the Rebaba Home Battery extends it to households.

Paula Runsten, CEO and co-founder of Rebaba, described the broader vision: “For most people, their energy consumption is highest in the evenings, when they are home relaxing or cooking dinner, but that’s also when electricity prices peak. With batteries, we can reduce these costs but also use more of the solar produced earlier in the day, or even supply energy back to the grid. That is the future we want to build: millions of homes working together to make the entire energy system stronger. We don’t need to wait for slow organisations, households can lead the change, starting now.”
