Lovable, the Stockholm-based AI web app builder, has acquired Sutro, a San Francisco-based startup that offered a toolkit for building full-stack apps with LLMs. Sutro’s founder and three engineers are joining the Lovable team as part of the deal.
The Deal
Lovable explained the rationale behind the acquisition: “As more people build and ship software, understanding it has to be as effortless as building it — knowing what a system can and will do, and why, without having to untangle the complexity underneath. When anyone can put that software into production, that reliability and trust have to be as solid as the experience of building it in the first place. That’s why we’re excited to announce that Lovable has acquired Sutro. For five years, the Sutro team built a language, compiler, and backend platform that made application behavior and rules explicit — engineering built for security and reliability. That reflects a conviction we share: people should be able to trust the software they build to run their businesses, while the platform carries more of the underlying complexity.”
The Team
Sutro founder Tomas Halgas, along with engineers Max Gfeller, Tony Zhan, and Hirad Arshadi, are joining Lovable as part of the acquisition. Tomas will lead Lovable’s technical evangelism, continuing the same work that drove Sutro: making how the technology actually works understandable to the people building with it.
Expanding to San Francisco
In conjunction with the acquisition, Lovable plans to open an official office in San Francisco, marking a deeper push into the US market alongside its existing Stockholm base.
