Swedish digital health company Brain Stimulation, a Umeå-based startup developing solutions for stroke rehabilitation and cognitive assessment, has filed for bankruptcy.
The company had built a digital platform designed to support rehabilitation, cognitive screening, and diagnostic decision-making for patients recovering from stroke and other acquired brain injuries. Its technology aimed to help healthcare professionals monitor cognitive function while making rehabilitation more accessible and data-driven.
The bankruptcy marks another challenge for the digital health sector, where many startups continue to face long sales cycles, regulatory complexity, and constrained investment despite strong clinical demand.
Focused on Brain Rehabilitation
Founded in Umeå, Brain Stimulation developed software intended to assist clinicians in evaluating and supporting patients affected by neurological conditions. The platform combined digital cognitive testing with rehabilitation tools to improve patient follow-up after stroke and traumatic or acquired brain injuries.
With stroke remaining one of the leading causes of long-term disability worldwide, digital rehabilitation technologies have attracted increasing attention from healthcare providers seeking scalable ways to deliver care beyond hospitals.
A Difficult Market for HealthTech
While demand for digital healthcare solutions continues to grow, many early-stage HealthTech companies struggle to achieve commercial scale. Procurement processes within public healthcare systems are often lengthy, and demonstrating both clinical effectiveness and economic value requires significant time and capital.
Brain Stimulation had previously secured venture capital backing, but the company ultimately could not sustain its operations.
The case highlights the ongoing funding pressures facing European HealthTech startups, particularly those operating in highly regulated clinical environments where product development, validation, and customer adoption can take years.
