Cosine Secures €2.2 Million to Revolutionize AI-Driven Software Development

London and San Francisco-based Cosine has successfully raised €2.2 million in funding to advance its groundbreaking work in autonomous AI software development. The funding round, led by Uphonest and SOMA Capital, with participation from Lakestar and Focal, highlights strong investor confidence in Cosine’s mission to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence.

The company has made headlines by achieving an impressive 30% score on the SWE-Bench, the industry’s leading benchmark for evaluating AI-driven software engineering capabilities. This milestone represents a remarkable 56% improvement over the previous best score, which stood at 19%, and a staggering 2196% enhancement over the 1.31% score recorded by OpenAI’s GPT-4. The benchmark rigorously tests an AI’s ability to understand, modify, and generate complex code across real-world tasks, making Cosine’s achievement a significant leap forward in AI development.

Alistair Pullen, Cosine’s CEO, remarked on the achievement, stating, “Our breakthrough in codifying human reasoning allows us to train AI models that operate well beyond the narrow confines of current software development tasks. We’re not just improving AI; we’re redefining its potential.”

Cosine’s flagship product, the Artificial Developer Genie, is designed to perform like a top-tier human developer. It can autonomously solve bugs, build new features, and refactor code, functioning either independently or alongside human developers. This innovative approach has outpaced competitors like AWS’s Amazon Q Developer and Cognition’s Devin, both of which scored below 20% on the SWE-Bench. Cognition, despite its lower score, was recently valued at $2 billion after raising funds from Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund.

Founded in 2022, Cosine was born from the realization of the potential of using large language models (LLMs) to emulate the behavior of human software developers. The company’s focus on creating AI that mimics human reasoning has positioned it as a leader in the field, with its technology demonstrating unprecedented resilience in tackling open-ended problems across various domains.

Sam Stenner, CIO at Cosine, emphasized the company’s vision: “We are focused on creating a colleague, not a co-pilot. Our work with OpenAI to fine-tune their LLMs has shown that we can consistently push the limits of AI performance.”

Ellen Ma, Partner at Uphonest Capital, also praised Cosine’s innovation, stating, “Cosine is not just enhancing AI; they’re teaching AI to reason, providing companies with a true AI colleague.”

With this latest funding, Cosine is poised to continue its pioneering work in AI, further cementing its position as a trailblazer in the industry.
